Lahaul & Spiti – “The Gray Mystique”

Delhi » Manali » Keylong » Baralacha Pass » Chandertal Lake » Kunzam Pass » Ki Monastery » Kibber Village » Tabo Monastery » Pin Valley » Kaza » Manali » Delhi

The Himalaya, which in the ancient Indian language Sanskrit means' 'Abode Of Snows,' are the greatest mountains on the face of the earth. They have an especially unique place in the history and legend of India. In legends and myths they were worshipped as the dwelling place of the Gods of Hindu Pantheon. They extend in a grand sweep all along the northern frontiers of the Indian nation and conceal within their folds many vibrant lands and peoples.
The Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is one such hidden gem hidden in the bosom of these mountains. Many enchanting treks in this beautiful land, take you deep into the land locked Valleys of the Western Himalaya. Dense forests of massive Deodar (Cedar) and Fir trees, green meadows, sparkling streams, deep blue lakes, sleepy little villages and somber gorges and ridges with fantastic forms and shapes created by Mother Nature, characterize this ancient land - as old as the earth itself. These treks / excursions also provide an introduction to the rare Himalayan flora and fauna and also to the rich culture of this region.
Dominating over all these stand the mighty Western Himalayan ranges and their towering snow mantled peaks, which keep you spellbound with their sheer grandeur and spectacular beauty.
Operational period: Mid June to end September
Physical requirement: Pax should be physically fit enough to walk for 6- 8 hours/ 12 – 18 kms Highest Altitude gained: Baralacha La 4830 m
Trek Gradient: Moderate to technical At one stark and forbidding, yet, Lahaul & Spiti has an ethernal beauty. The two twin valleys of Lahaul & Spiti in the north eastern corner of Himachal Pradesh, protected by distance, is a region of nature at its wildest which has lent it much enchantment. The word 'Lahaul' is regarded as a derivative of the Tibetan Lho-yul, 'southern country' or of Lhahi-yul 'country of Gods'. Si means 'mani', piti 'place' and Spiti means 'the place of mani'.
From Lahaul, the Himalayas can be seen in their entire mighty splendor. Geologically and archaeologically, Spiti is a living museum. The mountains are devoid of any vegetation and erosion by wind, sun and snow over thousands of years has laid bare the rocks. The rugged and rocky mountain slopes sweep down to the riverbeds giving the landscape a moon-like appearance.
Lahaul & Spiti's attractions include the Buddhist monasteries, passes, glaciers, lakes and turbulent rivers. Lahaul & Spiti are predominantly Buddhist areas, and their comparative inaccessibility has helped preserve their culture.
Spiti is a fascinating area for Buddhist art and culture. The monasteries of Spiti are rich repositories of ancient murals, thankhas, woodcarvings and golden images of the Padmasambhava. The people are charming, friendly and hospitable with their own traditional dances, ballads, folk tales and legends.
Chandertal Lake at an altitude of 4300 m is surrounded by snow and acres of scree. This blue water has a circumference of 2.5 kms. This is the source of river Chandra. This is believed to be the spot from where the God Indra’s chariot took the eldest Pandava brother “YUDISHTRA” to the heaven in = his mortal form. Trek from Baralacha pass to Chandertal lake and then onwards to Kunzam pass provides beautiful views of CB mountain range on a clear day.
