Air

India is accessible by air from virtually every continent. Most international flights arrive in Delhi or Mumbai, but there are also international airports in Chennai, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Goa and Kolkatta.

  1. From Pakistan (Lahore) to Amritsar & Delhi are possible.
  2. From Europe the best journey is the to travel to India is the Istanbul-Teheran-Quetta route.
  3. From Bhutan the nearest Indian airport is Bagdogra, which is, three to four hours drive from Phuntsholing on the Bhutan border.
  4. From Nepal the best air route is Kathmandu to Delhi & Varanasi
  5. From Bangladesh the best air route is Dhaka to Kolkata.

Sea

No regular passenger liners operate to India. However, the world cruise ships also stop at some ports like Mumbai, Marmagao, Kochi and Chennai. Tourist can also come to India via Colombo from Maldives into Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

 

Road

Several road borders crossing between India & neighbors are open periodically, but permission to cross cannot be guaranteed due to political and climatic conditions.

The Lahore to Amritsar via the Wagha border post is the main road link to Pakistan.

Dhaka is only 4 hours by road from border on Tripura.

From Bhutan border Darjeeling is a 7 hours drive.

From Nepal 4 crossings are commonly used:-

  1. via Banbassa/Mahendranagar to Delhi
  2. via Lumbini to Gorakhpur or to Varanasi
  3. via Raxaul-Birganj to Patna
  4. via Kakarbhitta to Darjeeling/Siliguri
